I too use this unit for VFR air navigation….manually entering lat/long from current AFDs, Flight Guides, airnav.com, or landings.com
It works perfectly.
When bearing and heading are identical–inevitably, when it says you are 30 miles or less from the airport, you can make it out on the nose…..amazing!
WAY easier to use than the Garmin Etrex.
I bought a second one as back-up…kind of a pilot thing. I run the primary one on the Magellan 12v lighter socket adapter.
(Non-aviators note that an FAA approved panel-installed GPS can easily exceed ,500)

It’s very valuable for driving, too. It’s not too difficult to get lat/long from a variety of sources. (If you need turn by turn prompts, you might not be much of a driver OR navigator.) If it says go 045, find some way to get east and north.

A tip for GPS users:
Find yourself a Britannica World Atlas at a used book fair. What you are after is the 200 pp index of World cities at the back. ALL significant World Cities are given in lat/long, even US cities under 5,000 population—so you can always have the answer to “….how much further, Daddy?”

I had a case for a Garmin GPS and it was just a belt clip that you slide on and off your belt, and unfortunately, it can come off your belt (which it often did) and you can lose your GPS unit for good.

This eXplorist case comes with a real nice strong wide and secure strip that you have to undo your belt and loop your belt through, so when you are out hiking, you don’t have to keep checking and be afraid it fell off your belt, because there is no way for this case to come off without you taking your belt off! NICE!

It’s not just a loop of string or rope either, it is better described as a belt or strip of tough material attached real secure to the case.

True, you can’t quickly slide the case on and off of your belt as with a clip, but why would you need to take the case on and off, you take the GPS out when you need it and the case stays on the belt where it is safe and can’t get dropped or lost.

For this is a great case. I can get the GPS in and out quickly and easily. I like the secure, yet easy to open zipper as opposed to the velcro flap that my Garmin case has.

The only negative I would have is that I would have liked the padding to be a bit thicker, but I suppose I can always slide a strong piece of leather or something into it on the inside to better protect the GPS from an impact to the case. There is enough room to do this and still be able to get the GPS unit in and out without problem.

After reading a few other reviews about similar products, I was a bit weary of purchasing this item. Nevertheless, after the reading reviews about this product, I was decided to go ahead and purchase it. I am very happy with the product. My GPS fits perfectly into bracket. Not only does it fits into the bracket, it snaps & locks into place. I think that this is the perfect bracket for my Magellan Meridian Platimum GPS. We’ve own this Magellan 5310 now for about a year now and are very happy with it. And we’re pretty pleased with it because it has taken us from point A to point B very reliably. We live in the Snohomish County in the State of Washington and whenever we drive in to Seattle it is like hell on wheels. After our more than 50 trips into Seattle we are now sort of comfortable with the city’s layout but not really. Our Magellan gets us in and out of Seattle to clinics and restaurants to theatres in surprisingly quick routes. When our Magellan says we have arrived, “quoila” there it is. Always to our surprise! And we are surprised because we get to our destination by simply following the voiced instructions and the easy to read directions on the screen. It has audio prompts to indicate when to actually make a turn and instructions as to how far your are away from making those turns with eg.’right turn in 3/10th of a mile’. It also handles multiple turns quite well too. For example it lets you know that you will be making a right turn and another right turn right after the other. So it prepares you quite well without the stress that use to accoompany our trips into the unknown.
I cannot comment on the customer service because I have never used it. The battery does not last very long so it requires it to be plugged into the cigarette lighter at all times. The unit that we have has completely dropped the map from its memory when the battery completely depleted itself and to get it back it lets you know that you should go to the Magellan site to recover full functionality in a matter of seconds after making connection. We are quite computer and device savvy however.
One more comment I would add is that when you look at the customer review ratings between Tom Tom, Magellan and Garmin the graph depiction from excellent to poor is about the same. Didn’t the smart phone business have about the same graph shape just before Apple showed up with the iphone?
