Garmin eTrex Vista Handheld GPS Navigator

Review Garmin eTrex Vista Handheld GPS Navigator

Garmin eTrex Vista Handheld GPS
Bought it for a road bicycle, and I love it! Bought it with the bicycle mount. Received it and started using it the same day. It has a million features, so it takes a bit of reading to setup all the options. Oh…you have to buy MapSource to fully utilize the unit. I tried the cheaper method of uploading and downloading to the unit. Could not get to work with Google Earth Plus, I did get to work with other 3rd party software. But I finally coughed up the 0 bucks (almost as much as the unit) and bought MapSource North America.

Now I was cooking was gas! Uploading, downloading, mapping, graphing, analyzing my ride. It is incredible all the information that can be gleamed from the interface with MapSource.

Now that I have used it for a bit, I love it even more. You can plan routes, or not. Use the tracks you created, later. The graphing on the altimeter is wild! The maps are incredibly detailed. I could go on and on about all the features, for the price this unit is the BOMB.

I had a sneaky suspicion that I might need to buy the software. So I chose the Vista. However, I am so pleased with the unit that I wish I had bought the colored more sensitive(GPS wise) higher end model.

Garmin eTrex Vista Handheld GPS Navigator Details

  • WAAS-Enabled
  • Same Features As Grm0025600 Etrex Legend Plus A Built-In Barometric Altimeter & Electronic Compass
  • Compass Provides Bearing Information While User Is Standing Still
  • Altimeter Determines Precise Altitude & Provides A Graphic Profile Of User¿S Trip
  • Contains 24 Mb Internal Memory For Storing Detailed Map Data

Garmin eTrex Vista Handheld GPS Navigator Specifications
Garmin’s eTrex Vista GPS receiver is smaller than its popular eMaps, but far more powerful. The Vista offers more memory, more features, and more convenience than any other GPS hardware in this price range.

Don’t be fooled by the product’s small screen. Although smaller than the display used in products like the eMap, it has a higher resolution, letting it show more information more crisply. Small text can be difficult to read from a distance, but there are “big number” options available to make important data like your speed easy to read.

It’s this configurability that makes the eTrex Vista so special.

Map page (shown with optional MapSource topo detail).

You can easily set it up to suit your needs, regardless of the situation. Menu choices are highlighted and confirmed with a small joystick near the top of the unit, providing an elegant interface for navigating a formidable amount of options. Our only complaint is that the joystick used to access all the product’s features is offset to the left, making it nearly impossible to control using only your right hand. When the joystick is held in your left hand, however, every control is within easy reach of your left thumb, freeing your right hand to hold a flashlight, walking stick, lantern, or anything else.

This GPS unit’s diminutive size and weight, not to mention its rugged design, make it an ideal hiking companion. It’s waterproof in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes and is generously coated with shock-absorbing rubber. The barometric altimeter keeps a historical record of your ascents and descents, graphing elevation changes so you can easily track your progress.

Elevation page

The ability to store waypoints, points of interest, routes, and other information means you can blaze your own trail and always find your way back to camp.

Best of all, 24 MB of internal memory makes it possible to store an enormous amount of data from Garmin’s optional MapSource CDs, turning the eTrex Vista into an interactive road atlas. The memory isn’t expandable, but 24 MB is enough to store street-level data for entire states in some cases.

A serial cable is included for transferring the maps from your PC to the GPS unit, but it’s terribly slow. A USB connector, sold separately, transfers data in a fraction of the time.

The eTrex Vista was very accurate in testing, especially in a car on the open road. Accuracy diminished somewhat when the device was used in heavy tree cover or a dense urban area, but not enough that you’re ever going to get lost or miss an exit. Used side-by-side with an eMap, the eTrex Vista kept up in update speed while displaying even more information on the moving map than the eMap did, cementing its position as perhaps the best all-around handheld GPS unit money can buy. –T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Small and light without sacrificing features
  • 24 MB of integrated memory stores reams of detailed maps
  • High-resolution screen displays sharp text legible even at extremely small sizes

Cons:

  • Can’t be used one-handed when held in the right hand
  • Smaller display is hard to read from a distance, as when the device is placed on a dashboard

Garmin nüvi 205 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Review Garmin nüvi 205 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

I have not had an oppotunity to use th GPS on the road. It’s winter here. I will use it as soon as the season changes. I have used it locally. I have found it to be a very useful instrument in getting around town. I like it compact size. I did have a Garmin 330 which I also found very useful. I lost it much to my dismay. I am glad the present Garmin was available through Amazon at nearly the same price.
I believe that I have made a good decision to buy the nuvi 205 portable GPS.

Garmin nüvi 205 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Details

  • 3.5-inch Touch Screen Navigation with Turn by Turn spoken Directions
  • Pre-loaded Maps for continental U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico with 6.5 million searchable points of interest
  • FM Traffic or MSN Direct Traffic/Content compatible (with optional GDB 55 receiver)
  • Easy to Use Interface; slim, pocket-sized form factor; 4-hour rechargeable battery
  • 3D terrain views, navigate to photo, and automatic time zone adjustment

Garmin nüvi 205 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Specifications
Garmin’s nüvi 2×5 models improveupon their 200-series predecessors by adding top-of-the-line features such as FM traffic updates or MSN Direct content capability to an entry-level line. But Garmin is also introducing some significant improvements with this new series, like a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature.

The nüvi 2×5 models sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more.

Important Product Information: This device features a “screen lock” feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2×5 and 7×5 Garmin units. If you slide the “Power” key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the “Power” key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for “Pedestrian” mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

Improved Interface

One of Garmin’s key product philosophies is to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box, and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin’s portable navigation devices.

Garmin’s interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate.

This year, Garmin has redesigned its interface to include much more useful information.

HotFix™ – aka: Satellite Ephemeris Data Prediction

hotfix Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position.  Until the device gets a “lock” on three satellites, it can’t effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get “satellite lock” is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin’s new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Using Garmin’s unique Web site — Garmin Connect Photos — users can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

Traffic-Capable for Either FM Traffic or Enhanced MSN Direct Content

MSN Direct Enhanced Traffic and Content

traffic reports With an optional receiver, you can access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nüvi.

Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services.

A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the receiver. After that, subscription fees are .95 per year, or 9.95 for a lifetime subscription.

FM Traffic

TMC traffic service coverage map With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you’ll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you’re forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi’s sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there’s no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a “silent” FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel’s Total Traffic Network is included with the receiver. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website.

Microsoft MapPoint 2009 [OLD VERSION]

Review Microsoft MapPoint 2009 [OLD VERSION]

I have only used an earlier version of MapPoint and even then for only in a strictly direction-finding capacity. I understood the data mapping functionality of the product but that was never a feature I intended to use. MapPoint 2009 seems to go one better than that earlier version in refining both those features I like and use (ie. direction and route finding) and those which I have less use of.

From a usability standpoint, this interface is intuitive and easy-to-use. For me, there were no problems with moving around the map interface and zooming in to whatever I was interested with either the mouse or keyboard. The various features for route planning is as good as any other on the market today and as this is my primary focus, I’m functionally happy with MapPoint 2009. With the “optimize trip”, MapPoint 2009 helps me make the best use of my time, especially when I am geocaching when I have to hit caches in several different areas. In that regard, I find it handles off-road situations rather poorly, but that’s understandable. With features like being able to create what they call a “Drivetime Zone”, you can find subtle and cool ways to use your maps. Drivetime Zones will select and show you what you can reach within a set amount of time from a particular center point.

Export and import of data is simple and easy with the Import Data Wizard that automatically understands what kind of data you’re importing (of course, if it contains addresses!) and then sorting graphically for data. Having direct, in-program access to demographic information must make Real Estate agents drool in analyzing their information. Using the Data Mapping Wizard (love those wizards, don’t you?) makes doing such things easy.
I particularly like the ability to insert maps into other Microsoft products, especially the Office suite such as (especially) PowerPoint presentations. I’m going to give this product four stars because I think it should include at least a simple GPS device for the price.

Microsoft MapPoint 2009 [OLD VERSION] Details

Garmin MapSource Trip and Waypoint Manager

Review Garmin MapSource Trip and Waypoint Manager

I am currently using this software to enter all of the coordinates of the public artificial reefs off the coast of Orange Beach, Alabama ( about 400-500 reefs). Alabama has one of the largest reef programs in the country. This software prevents me from having to be in the boat to enter each coordinate in to my Garmin 545s. I can enter everything into my notebook computer, save it to a memory card and transfer the card to my Garmin unit with the memory card. Could not be easier!!!

The MapSource window contains five main components: the toolbars, data tabs, splitter bar, graphic map, and status bar. Using the Map Select tool, you can highlight a section from a detailed map that you intend to use on your trip. The map selection will then turn pink, and you can transfer that section to your Garmin GPS unit. This feature allows you to download only the information that you’ll need. If the map set is too big, you can deselect some regions or shrink the selected area to fit the memory of your Garmin GPS. The MapSource software makes it easy to customize your maps to fit your needs and your GPS unit’s capacity.

You can simplify your pre-trip planning for your next outdoor adventure or business trip by using the MapSource software to transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks between your Garmin GPS and PC. Plan your next trip on your PC, download customized GPS data to your Garmin unit, and hit the road. The Trip and Waypoint Manager also lets you archive your GPS data for future use. And with this software, you can back up waypoints, routes, and tracks that you’ve saved on your Garmin GPS to your PC, ensuring that you’ll always have quick access to all the travel information that you’ll need.

This software comes with a general worldwide database that provides basic cartography, including interstates, motorways, oceans, and various other general reference details to help you plan your next trip. Map detail also includes political boundaries and principal cities and towns. This trip-planning CD is designed for use with Garmin units that have no built-in map detail or city point database and is compatible with a wide array Garmin products.

Note: This product does not contain any detailed maps and is not compatible with iQue. See the product’s Technical Data for a full list of compatible Garmin GPS units.
